Dan is kickin' my bu*t in the stock competition. His strategy is rather good: Buy cheap risky stocks. It's virtual money anyways and we should not be afraid of losing. But then if you take a step back, we use this venue to learn about the market and to become more knowledgeable of trading. Perhaps it's best to trade the way one would with real money. I do know cases where people do better with penny stocks, just look at Dan Wallach.
